The Caprese cake takes its name from Capri, the Italian island where it comes from.
The story says that the first person who baked this cake was the chef Carmine di Fiore.
He made this cake by mistake. In fact, the chef was baking the cake for three American gangsters; therefore, he was so nervous that he forgot to put the flour in the dough, or probably replaced it by cocoa powder. As result it came out a very low gluten-free cake, made with almonds, refined sugar, real butter, pure dark chocolate and eggs, with an unmistakable flavour.
The mistake turned into a success because the cake was so delicious that the Americans wanted to know the recipe to take it overseas, where it was successful too.
The chef started to bake the cake achieving a great kudos.
